Scholarships from Outside Sources

Virginia Wesleyan University welcomes the use of scholarship and grant funds to cover educational costs whenever possible. While scholarship opportunities are carefully reviewed, the publication of a scholarship opportunity does not imply the funding entity or the scholarship opportunity is endorsed by Virginia Wesleyan University.

We recommend that students seeking scholarship assistance review the consumer information page prior to submitting scholarship applications to private entities.

The U.S. Department of Education provides guidance for students seeking on their website. Please review this resource in addition to the scholarship information provided within this page.

Tips for Outside Scholarships

Think Outside the Box: Start local then work your way out. Remember to explore multiple sources for scholarships, including churches and community organizations, branches of the military, Masonic Lodges, Elks and Moose Lodges, American Legion and VFW posts, local businesses and trade unions, your high school, as well as your parents’ employers who may offer scholarships to their employees’ dependents. Research organizations in your field of interest as well to see if they offer scholarships to students.

Read between the Lines: Always read the requirements for the scholarship, but don’t be discouraged by the name of a scholarship. You may not meet all of the requirements for a particular scholarship, but if you are the only person who applies, you could be the recipient.

Avoid Scams: You should never have to pay or purchase a product in order to apply or receive a scholarship.
