VWU Theatre Presents Anastasia
Performances are scheduled for April 4 – 7 in the Goode Fine and Performing Arts Center

Virginia Wesleyan Theatre celebrates the five year anniversary of the opening of the Susan S. Goode Fine and Performing Arts Center with “Anastasia,” the legend of the lost Russian princess, Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov. Set against the backdrop of the Russian Revolution, Anastasia follows Anya, a young woman grappling with questions of identity and belonging amidst the chaos of an ever-changing world. Though the stability and hope provided by an overthrown Romanov dynasty seem to be all but lost, Anya ignites a spark of possibility in the hearts of the Russian people.
Directed by Professor of Theatre Dr.Travis Malone, “Anastasia” is a story of resilience, identity, and the desire to hold loved ones close. With four performances planned, the musical opens on April 4 at 7:30 p.m. and runs through April 7 with the final performance at 2 p.m. Shows on April 5 and 6 will be at 8:00 p.m.
“This musical is a journey of discovery,” notes Dr. Malone. “Audiences will be captivated by the theme of staying true to oneself despite life’s challenges.”
With this production of “Anastasia,” Malone marks his 40th theater production as director at Virginia Wesleyan – a testament to his long-time dedication to the university as a professor, Dean of the Susan S. Goode School of Arts and Humanities, and Anne B. Shumadine Dean of the Batten Honors College. Anastasia is not only a landmark production for Malone, but honors a special milestone in the life of the Arts at Virginia Wesleyan.
“We were looking for a large-scale musical to open our fifth year at the Goode Center. Our production of “Anastasia” will be the collegiate/professional Coastal Virginia premier of the musical. The production is sweeping in scale, scope, and emotion, and we hope that viewers will lose themselves in the music and story.”
Featuring unforgettable performances from a multi-generation cast, Anastasia invites audiences to embark on a journey of rediscovery and hope.
“The message of this musical is that no matter where we go – sometimes the things we’re searching for are right in front of us, especially if we will stop and listen to one another. That’s a lesson we can all use.”
