The Sparkle and Glitter of Which our Campaigns are Made: U.S. Presidential Campaign Buttons and the Representation of Religion Brock Commons 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. Buttons supporting William Jennings Bryan endorsed him—in Yiddish. Fans of Herbert Hoover, a Quaker, demanded “A Christian in the White House,” even though he was running against a Catholic. Bahais proudly declared their support for Barack Obama on their lapels, as did Buddhists, Catholics, Confucians, Druze, and many others. As former New York Mayor Ed Koch declared, “Buttons, stickers, and songs . . . are the sparkle and glitter of which our campaigns are made.” This exploration of presidential campaign buttons examines the diversity of religious terms, images, and symbols and how they have been used to communicate both positive and negative messages to potential voters. Eric M. Mazur, Ph.D., is the Gloria and David Furman Professor of Judaic Studies at VWU and serves as the Fellow for Religion, Law, and Politics for the Robert Nusbaum Center. "Liberation That We Made for Ourselves鈥: The Legacy of Queer History in Hampton Roads Brock Commons 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. Book bans, debates over bathroom access, and the growing influence of small but vocal groups of parents pressuring school boards and public libraries to adopt anti-trans and anti-gay policies do not inspire hope that a queer future will be more liberatory than the past. Events from local queer history like Anita Bryant’s 1977 visit to Norfolk on her “New Creation Crusade” and the fight to keep Our Own, the local lesbian and gay newspaper, on public library shelves in the 1980s offer a roadmap for thinking about and responding to anti-LGBTQ legislation and a political climate hostile to queer people. The event is open to the campus community and will take place in Brock Commons. It is co-sponsored by the History Department and the Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies Program. For more information, contact Dr. Tyler Lehrer at tlehrer@vwu.edu or Dr. Jennifer Slivka at jslivka@vwu.edu. |
