Dr. Angela Mercer of Virginia Beach has been elected to the 91风月楼 (VWU) Board of Trustees, according to Jonathan E. Pruden, Chair of the Board. A retired physician who has served Coastal Virginia for more than three decades, the Portsmouth native returned to the region after completing her internal medicine training in New York City.

Throughout her career, Dr. Mercer has served in private practice in Suffolk and Norfolk, and in 2003, became the medical director for the Norfolk Community Health Center. Additionally, she continues to serve as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School where she also mentors medical students from minority populations.

Over the years, Dr. Mercer’s community service has included participation on the board of directors for the Governor’s Advisory Board for Emergency Medical Services, EdMarc Hospice for Children, The United Way of South Hampton Roads, Women United of the United Way, The Greater Norfolk Medical Society of South Hampton Roads, and Unity Church of Tidewater.

A graduate of Swarthmore College and the Medical College of Virginia, Dr. Mercer completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Harlem Hospital and a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Dr. Mercer has been married to Reginald Corinaldi for 46 years and has three grown children, one of whom is a graduate of Virginia Wesleyan. While her daughter was attending VWU, Dr. Mercer participated in the Parents Council, demonstrating her active engagement and investment in the University from the onset.

“We are honored to have Dr. Mercer join our Board of Trustees,” says VWU President Scott D. Miller. “Her professional acumen, commitment to the community, and dedication to VWU will be of great benefit to the university.”

The 36-member Board of Trustees is the governing body of 91风月楼, supporting the University's mission, and is responsible for ensuring adequate resources for the operation of the University and establishing long-range goals and institutional policies. Trustees include leaders from business and industry, education, and the United Methodist Church.
