CIC Award for Philanthropy Presented to George Birdsong
Birdsong’s generous spirit is ubiquitous throughout VWU campus

George Birdsong, a prominent philanthropist and CEO of Birdsong Corporation, is set to receive the prestigious 2024 Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) Award for Philanthropy during the CIC Presidents Institute in January. This national award celebrates Mr. Birdsong's exceptional contributions to independent higher education across the United States, most notably in Virginia. 
Mr. Birdsong, alongside his corporation and family, has been instrumental in advancing educational initiatives, providing substantial financial support for scholarships, academic programs, and athletic endeavors. This generosity extends to multiple educational and charitable organizations, reflecting a deep-seated commitment to his community and beyond.
Mr. Birdsong's unwavering dedication to education is evident in his long-standing involvement with the Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges (VFIC), where he has played a pivotal role since 1994. The VFIC supports 17 independent liberal arts colleges and universities, including Virginia Wesleyan, extending Mr. Birdsong’s reach to every corner of the Commonwealth.
In recognition of his wide-ranging philanthropic efforts, the Virginia House of Delegates passed a joint resolution in Mr. Birdsong’s honor, underscoring the impactful nature of his contributions. His philanthropy, serving as an inspiring model, has been lauded by leaders of independent colleges and universities nationwide for its profound impact and enduring legacy. As such, he was similarly honored by the VFIC in 2023.
At Virginia Wesleyan, Mr. Birdsong’s 21 years as an active trustee, culminating in his designation as Trustee Emeritus in 2015, reflect his deep commitment to the institution. His contributions to VWU were further recognized with a Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) in 2016.
Mr. Birdsong's influence at Virginia Wesleyan is notably embodied in Birdsong Field, an athletic facility that stands as a testament to the Birdsong family's generosity. His family’s support has also been instrumental in the establishment of several key landmarks and initiatives on the VWU campus, including Birdsong Hall, the Birdsong Civic Engagement Endowment, the Sue Benton Birdsong Entrance, and Birdsong Scholarships. Each of these contributions reflects Mr. Birdsong's deep-rooted commitment to enhancing the educational environment at VWU, leaving a lasting legacy that has and will benefit generations of students.
The CIC Award for Philanthropy is reserved for individuals whose philanthropic efforts demonstrate a deep love and commitment to humanity. It is awarded to those whose contributions significantly benefit multiple independent higher education institutions, embodying the Council’s core mission. Mr. Birdsong joins the ranks of other notable benefactors like longtime VWU benefactors Joan and Macon Brock, who have similarly left an indelible mark on the educational landscape.
